What determines the sex of a baby

It's more likely a couple will have a baby girl if the husband's character is stronger than his wife's, or a boy if the wife's character is stronger than her husband's.

Verity:

A "stronger character" could mean one person is more dominant in the relationship than the other. However, where one partner uses their strength to overpower the other, the dominant partner uses less of their energy than the dominated partner who uses more of their energy to cope. So which of them has the stronger character?

The answer to that really doesn't matter for this superstition because a child's biological sex (male or female) is entirely determined by the chromosome that the male parent contributes.

(Males have XY sex chromosomes while females have XX sex chromosomes; the male can contribute the X or the Y chromosome, while the female contributes one of her X chromosomes. In other words, it's only the father's contribution which determines the sex of a baby.)

Of the billion sperm from the man, it's purely a matter of chance whether it's an X or Y chromosome which fertilises the egg.

There's no way that the character of either partner can influence the outcome.
