Mole superstitions

The location of a mole affects your fate and personality:

  • On the forehead, a mole means "Star-Touched”, a sign of divine insight or leadership. A mole here whispers of a destiny written in the stars, a soul with vision beyond the veil.
  • Between the eyebrows. it means the “Third Eye’s Kiss”, the mark of deep intuition, a seeker of truth, born to see beyond the surface of the world. This is particularly the case if the mole sightly protrudes.
  • Elsewhere near the eyes, a mole is a "Tear Keeper”, showing sensitivity and emotional depth, storing sorrows and joys of past lives, quiet souls with thunderous hearts.
  • On the nose a mole aligns with financial wealth, but only if it's on the right-hand side. If it's on the left-hand side then the opposite is the case, meaning that you are destined to struggle financially. (Be aware that right-is-left and left-is right when you look in a mirror!) A mole on the tip of the nose indicates neither wealth nor poverty, rather it suggests you can be impulsive and sometimes quick tempered.
  • Mole haiku
On the cheek, where the moon kissed you in your sleep to carry emotion like water, it is a symbol of charm, mystery and a gentle heart.
  • Near the lips, the "Bard’s Blessing”, bestowing eloquence and allure. A mark for those destined to speak beauty into being.
  • On the jawline it is the "Guardian’s Mark”, a sign of strength and resilience. It speaks of someone grounded, a protector of others, carrying ancestral roots in their bones.
  • On the chin, the "Wanderer’s Compass”, a mole is a mark of determination and a journeying spirit, drawn to movement, always chasing the horizon. If the mole is on the right-hand side, then you are likely to be a skilled and diplomatic negotiator, whereas if it's on the left, then you are more candid. A mole in the centre of the chin gives you the wisdom of knowing when to be indirect, and when to be forthright.

Critique:

This is perhaps the only superstition that actually carries some benefit.

But first, let's look at some obvious flaws:

The position of a mole is considered lucky in one culture and unlucky in another. If the meaning were real, it wouldn’t change by geography or century.

In Japan the idea of fate and karmic echoes fits within the Shinto and Buddhist world view, where physical traits reflect inner spiritual truths or karmic inheritance. But that is reflection only. The physical placement of moles on the face and elsewhere on the body, is a biological inheritance, not a karmic inheritance.

The placement is influenced by a mix of genetic (DNA), hormonal and environmental factors. If your parents or relatives have facial moles in certain spots, you might develop them in similar areas. There's no evidence to suggest that the position of a cluster of pigment cells can influence divine insight, or any of the other mystical qualities mentioned above.

So what's the benefit?

Well, if you've come to this page because you're curious about a mole on your face (or anywhere else), we've some important facts to share:

If you notice any of the following "ABCDE" warning signs, then you should seek medical advice from your GP (primary care physician) or a dermatologist.

  1. Asymmetry: one half doesn’t match the other
  2. Border: irregular, blurred or jagged edges
  3. Colour: uneven colour, or changes (black, blue, red, white)
  4. Diameter: larger than about 6 mm (¼ inch), or increasing in size
  5. Evolving: any change in size, shape, colour or texture

You should also see a doctor if a new mole appears in adulthood, or if any mole is bleeding, oozing or crusting without injury; if it's itchy, painful or tender; or if it looks very different from your other moles.

That being said, most facial moles are harmless, and many changes are benign. However, because the face is highly visible and melanoma can occur there, doctors tend to prefer early assessment rather than waiting.

If you’re ever in doubt, it’s reasonable to get it checked. Doctors would much rather say “this is nothing to worry about” than miss an early problem.
